Lecture – Claus Telge: "Nature Poetry without Nature? Ecomimetic Readings"

About the lecture:

Nature poetry indicates a dialectical movement: It layers literary device upon literary device (figures of speech, rhetorical strategies) in order to evoke the immediate presence of natural phenomena but at the same time pushes that which lies outside the text, that which has not yet become ‘nature’—in the sense of an aesthetic, cultural, historical, social or ideological construct—to a distance beyond reach. For this process Timothy Morton coined the term ecomimesis. The conceptual framework it refers to offers a critique of nature writing. In my talk, I will take up the six main elements of Morton’s ambient poetics (rendering, the medial, the timbral, the Aeolian, tone, and the re-mark) and illuminate their application to literary texts. My examples focus on the poetry and poetological writings of Marion Poschmann, who is considered one of the most important innovators of German nature poetry.
