Martina Elisabetta Misia: From Genres to Modes. Premises for a Theory of Hybridisation

The presentation means to offer a contribution to the debate on hybridisation, trying to overcome some of the schematisms concerning this concept. The premises for a theoretical discourse are identified in the aesthetics of conflict elaborated by Friedrich Nietzsche’s, who sees in the work of art the place of a struggle between opposing forces and thus lays the foundations for a distinction between sterile and fruitful hybridisations. Nietzsche’s reflections allow the elaboration of a discourse on hybridisation capable of renouncing the unilateral exaltation of mixtures as a phenomenon of modernity and postmodernity and overcoming the theories that prefer genres in favour of those who prefer ways of being and styles of thought, which best allow us to describe the ontological status of semantic objects such as human beings and works of art. The analysis of Salman Rushdie’s novel Midnight’s Children (1981) will provide an example of this perspective.

Martina Elisabetta Misia is PhD candidate in Transcultural Studies in the Humanities at the University of Bergamo (Italy). Her research focuses on hybridisations in contemporary narratives. She is involved with theory of literature and, in particular, her main research interests concern the aesthetics of conflict and theories of identity. She has been visiting student at the University of Perpignan – Via Domitia (France) and is currently visiting researcher at Trier University (Germany).
