Born in 1954 in Lohne/Oldenburg. Studied general literature, German literature, and education. Master of Arts 1979, Doctorate 1981, Habilitation 1986.

Professor of Literary Studies at Bergische Universität Wuppertal (1987-1988); guest professor and professor of General and Comparative Literary Studies at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (1988-1993); professor of General and Comparative Literary Studies at Johannes-Gutenberg- Universität Mainz (1993 – present).

Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS, 2008); fellow at Karl-Jaspers-Haus Oldenburg (2017).

Various teaching and research positions abroad, including Bloomington (Indiana), Groningen, and Rome.

 

Current Functions:

Long-term director of the Institute for General and Comparative Literary Studies and the Gutenberg Institute for World Literature and Writing-Oriented Media.

Long-standing spokesperson for the Interdisciplinary Working Group on Jewish Studies; founding member and spokesperson of the Center for Intercultural Studies (ZIS) at the University of Mainz.

Dean and Associate Dean; member of the Collegiate Senate.

Deputy Director and spokesperson of the Gutenberg Lectureship.
